Geography

Located 9.5 kilometers east of the municipal seat (São Vicente), Boaventura is surrounded by the parishes of Arco de São Jorge, Ponta Delgada, São Vicente, and Curral das Freiras, connected by the regional road that provides access to the western part of the island. The parish contains the localities Fajã do Penedo, Falca de Baixo, Falca de Cima, Santa Quitéira, Sant’Ana and São Cristivão.

The civil parish is crossed by the Levada da Achada Grande, Levada Grande, Levada das Faias, Levada da Achada, Levada dos Alves and Levada do Pastel, as well as the Levada da Achada (or Levada do Serrão), all of which have their origin in the Ribeira dos Moinhos.

A short distance from the coast are two islets, Ilhéu Porco and Ilhéu Vermelho, opposite the Ilhéu Preto (another islet) that fronts a steep vertical cliff.

The rugged escarpments divide the isolated settlements, such as Falca de Cima and Falca de Baixo, and it is served by a small port, at the mouth of the Ribeira da Boaventura, with its origin in the Serra das Torrinhas.

Economy
In the locality of São Cristóvão, there is a small roof-tile factory, utilizing dense clay,  resistant to saltwater damage.

32.819972, -16.973150

This parish of Boaventura is known for housing, in its territory, chapels, and houses, of undeniable heritage value, unfortunately, some of them have already been demolished. The Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Quitéria, was built in 1835 on the site of the old chapel. The ceiling was painted in 1929, by José Zeferino Nunes (Cirilho).

In terms of architectural heritage, there are also the manor houses: Banhos, from the end of the 19th century. XVIII was restored as a guesthouse in 1992, and Silveira, which has the year 1783 engraved on the entrance door.

It is no exaggeration when they call it a nature sanctuary. The parish of Boaventura stands out, in fact, for its untouched, intensely green landscapes.

With an economy based on agriculture, this parish is prepared, from a service point of view, to welcome tourists, and is highly sought after by those looking for a relaxing and restful holiday.

To get up close and personal with the spectacular nature of Boaventura, there is no better way than to travel, always with due caution, along the following routes: Achada Grande, Faias, Achada dos Alves e Pastel, Achada, Serrão and the Levada Grande.

CEMETERY VIEWPOINT
32.822589, -16.973887
Small viewpoint, with little parking space for cars, and from where you can see beautiful views of the town and the coastline.

VIEWPOINT OF SÃO CRISTÓVÃO
32.827059, -16.973155
Small private viewpoint, with little parking space for cars, and from where you can glimpse beautiful views of the coast.
Having a restaurant means there is a large influx of tourists, which can cause huge traffic jams or difficulties getting out or getting down to the viewpoint. Cars park along the access road and it can be difficult to reverse. A lot of patience is recommended. It is preferable to park your car in the first available space and walk to the viewpoint

Return to mainland Portugal and
to the Azores and Madeira islands
